Appearance
Depth Imbalance
Family: Microstructure
What it computes
Emits DepthImbalanceTick ticks carrying depth_imbalance, bid_size, ask_size, total_size off stock NBBO quote tape.
Available on the live, historical, and replay drives.
Methodology
Stoikov (2018) signed NBBO depth-skew ratio (bid_size − ask_size) / (bid_size + ask_size) in [-1, +1] — top-of-book directional-liquidity gauge companion to book_depth_at_top.
See the methodology overview for the citation index.
Inputs
Stock NBBO quote tape.
Key outputs
Depth_imbalance, bid_size, ask_size, total_size. The full field set is in the tick table below.
Output schema (DepthImbalanceTick)
The field / type / description table below is regenerated from the DepthImbalanceTick Rust source by docs-site/scripts/inject-doc-tables.ts on every npm run docs:build. Do not hand-edit between the sentinels.
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
symbol | Arc<str> | Underlying symbol (interned). Stock-only analytic. |
date | i32 | Trading-session date (YYYYMMDD). |
ms_of_day | i32 | Milliseconds since midnight at emission time. |
depth_imbalance | f64 | Signed depth imbalance: (bid_size − ask_size) / (bid_size + ask_size). Range [-1, +1]. Positive flags buyer-side depth dominance; negative flags seller-side depth dominance. |
bid_size | i32 | Bid size at emission time (resting shares on the best bid). |
ask_size | i32 | Ask size at emission time (resting shares on the best ask). |
total_size | i32 | Total depth — bid_size + ask_size. Surfaced so consumers can audit the imbalance denominator and distinguish a thin-book regime (small total depth) from a balanced-but-deep regime (large total depth, zero imbalance). |
Configuration (DepthImbalanceParams)
Regenerated from the DepthImbalanceParams Rust source — see the note above.
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
contracts | SecurityFilter | Contracts the subscription tracks. Stock-only NBBO stream — the filter must resolve to stock contracts. |
conditions | ConditionPolicy | Trade-condition admission policy applied to the NBBO bid-side condition byte. |
venues | ExchangeFilter | Exchange / venue admission policy. |
min_emit_interval_ms | i32 | Minimum interval between consecutive emissions per symbol, in milliseconds. Defaults to [DEFAULT_MIN_EMIT_INTERVAL_MS] (0 ms — every admission emits). |
